WITH HER LIPS PARTED by erratic breaths, her limbs flailing, her body jerking atop the table, she had been a magnificent sight. He would see it again, Alastair thought to himself as he gazed upon the future marchioness sitting across from him in his carriage.

He had known that she would not, at first, take to the breakfast he had planned for her, but Millie was possessed of an adventurous spirit. He expected she would succumb to the naughty pleasure eventually. For him, he had not expected to feel as jealous as he had. Winston, the bastard she had nearly married, had permeated his thoughts, when nothing but the witness of Millie submitting her supple body to the caresses of strangers ought have occupied him. Nevertheless, even his jealousy fueled his ardor.

He observed of his betrothed that she was pensive and would have thought their impending marriage to place her in much higher spirits. He reached for her hands. “I will make you happy, Millie. You shall want for nothing.”

She looked down at his hands and pressed them warmly in hers. “You are worth having had you not a penny to your name.”

“You are not merely flattering me? It would seem from your pensiveness that you still regard marriage to me with reservations.”

She had said she loved him, but he hoped she did not still have thoughts of Winston.

“I was thinking of my parents, how I have needlessly worried them, and what a shameful daughter I am. What misery I have caused them!”

“Your parents will never see the letter you had left, and I had told your maid that all was well, that I knew where you were.”

“Nevertheless, my parents must have greeted the situation with bewilderment. To arrive home from Christmas dinner to find their only child gone after I had made them think me too ill to leave the bed.”

“Do not forget I had a note sent from the posting inn where you were to have met Mr. Winston. It would have arrived at your house before your parents were done dining at Katherine’s.”

“But would that have truly allayed their unease or would they find it even more mysterious and worrisome to receive a note from you?”

Her brow furrowed and she sank into her seat.

“What I wrote was brief,” he conceded, “but the note did state that I had only honorable intentions toward you.”

She sat up. “But they might think from such words that you intend…”

“To marry you? I also wrote that they could soon expect good tidings.”

“Oh, Alastair!” she groaned.

Once again his wife-to-be appeared less happy than he would have expected. “What apprehensions they might have had would have been replaced by hope,” he told her. When she did not look mollified, he added, “It is a far better letter than the one you had left them.”

“Yes, but…”

He narrowed his eyes. “Do you remain unconvinced of marrying me?”

When she made no reply, he yanked her to him. His face inches from hers, he growled, “My God, what will it take to earn your love? Whatever it is, I will do it.
